Please join The Friends for our annual special event on Thursday, May 24 in the library beginning at 6.30pm.
Our 2012 gathering will feature guest author Dave Weinstein, speaking on: “Gambling halls to City of Homes, El Cerrito’s neighborhoods over time.”
Dave Weinstein, journalist, preservationist and vice president of the El Cerrito Historical Society, will discuss the growth of El Cerrito’s neighborhoods, from the early 20th century to today. His illustrated talk will show some of the city’s earliest homes, some of its quirkiest, and some of its most trend-setting modern houses from the 1950s and ‘60s. We’ll see clusters of bungalows from the 1900s, pictorial Storybook homes from the 1920s, and ranch-style neighborhoods from the 1950s.
Plus we’ll hear about how El Cerrito went from dairy land and chicken farms, gambling halls and its fabled greyhound tack, to the “City of Homes” that it dubbed itself after World War II.
